Basic Information for Travellers

Time
Singapore time is 8 hours (+8 GMT) ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Money
The local currency is Singapore dollars and cents. Notes come in denominations of S$2, S$5, S$10, S$20, S$50, S$100, S$500 and S$1,000. Foreign currency can easily be exchanged at the airport, hotels, banks or licensed money changers.

All major credit cards are accepted: Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club and JCB.

Passport, Visa and Entry Facilities
A valid passport is required for entry into Singapore. Generally, foreigners who do not require visas for entry and are visiting Singapore as tourists, may be given up to 30-day social visit passes upon their arrival in Singapore.

Climate
Singapore has a warm and humid climate throughout the year with a daily average temperature range of 24 degrees Celsius to 31 degrees Celsius. Intermittent showers on a sunny day are not unusual.

Drinking Water
Drinking water straight from the tap in Singapore is perfectly safe. However, for those who prefer bottled mineral water, local supermarkets and grocers usually carry a sizeable selection.

Electricity
Voltage is 220-240 volts AC, 50 cycles per second.

Tipping
Tipping is not practised as most hotels and restaurants in Singapore already levy a 10% service charge on customers' bills. Tipping is not a way of life in Singapore.

Getting Around Singapore
Singapore boasts of an efficient transport system. The affordable public transportation network comprising taxis, buses and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system gets you to most parts of the island easily.
